the end of the second Punic war. A Roman army led by Scipio, with crucial support
from the Numidian leader Masinissa who switched sides to the Romans, defeated a large Carthaginian force led by Hannibal.
Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar was born in Vivar near Burgos in 1043. After his death in 1099, he became the subject of many legends, stories and poems including the 12th century poem El cantor de mio Cid (The song of the Cid). He was a Castilian nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain. He was called El Cid (The Lord) by the Moors and El Campeador (The Champion) by the Christians.
